Choose a year, then follow a name
A year summary is a starting point. It shows which exact spellings led in that birth year and how their positions changed from the preceding file. Follow a linked profile to see whether a name has remained common, returned after decades, or only recently entered the top ten. For a spelling outside this selection, the annual popularity lookup searches the full published national series.
Read the numbers carefully
The SSA source records births associated with a reported sex field. Our calculated positions sort the published entries within that field and year by count. The files suppress small counts, and a name absent from a list can still have been used. Changes in rank do not explain why people chose a name. A rank may rise even when the raw count falls if other spellings fall more quickly.
