Practical guide

Make this tool useful.

Choose the kind of name you need

A first name is useful for a character, baby-name discussion, or classroom example. A surname can give a story an unexpected turn. A full name combines one entry from each collection; it does not represent a real person or a record in either source.

Filter without losing variety

Try one constraint at a time. An initial can set the sound; a length range can make names fit a design or a cast list. When too few entries match, the tool tells you which part of the name ran short so you can widen that filter.

Make a useful shortlist

Save promising results as you explore. Your shortlist stays in this browser until you clear it. Copy it for a draft or discussion, then check pronunciation and cultural context yourself before making a final choice.

Questions about this tool

Are results ranked by popularity?

No. The source data help define the collections, but each eligible entry has an equal chance within the chosen tier. Use the popularity lookup to inspect recorded birth counts.

Does a generated full name belong to someone?

It is assembled from separate first-name and surname lists. A combination may happen to match a real person; the tool neither checks nor asserts that.

Building a fictional character?

Once you have a name, try the Random Word Lab character generator for a starting point on the person behind it.

How do historical filters work?

An exact birth year (1880–2025) or decade selects given-name spellings published in the SSA national files for that period; the 2020s option covers only published years through 2025. A top-100, top-500, or top-2,000 band limits eligible names by a count-sorted position in the selected year or decade. These controls apply to given-name candidates, not surnames. A strict combination can leave too few names, and the result message will explain the shortage. This is a historical browsing filter, not a claim about a person with that name.
