Practical guide
Make this tool useful.
Find names in their period
The same spelling can be fashionable in more than one generation. Year-by-year lists let you see whether a candidate was familiar in the period you are writing about or newly rising in modern records.
Keep spelling variants separate
The SSA reports each spelling independently. Sophia and Sofia, for example, each have their own count and calculated position. We do not silently combine variants into a new unofficial rank.
Use the history lookup for one name
This list is a starting point. Follow a candidate into its 1880–2025 history to see every published annual row, including years outside the leading 1,000. A missing row is not proof of zero births.
Questions about this tool
Is the position an official SSA rank?
No. We sort published rows by count and then spelling, and label the resulting position as our calculation.
Why are there fewer names in some early years?
The number of published spellings and the source’s coverage changed over time. We show the available rows rather than padding a list with guesses.
