Practical guide
Make this tool useful.
Compare within one source
ONS counts names from live-birth registrations in England and Wales. The U.S. pages use a different SSA collection. Their raw totals and ranks should not be added together or read as one ranking.
Read a published rank
The ONS workbook provides ranks and counts. Tied names can share a rank, so the number of spellings in a rank-bounded list may differ from exactly 1,000. The first-letter filter keeps each published rank intact.
Understand redaction
ONS redacts counts of two or fewer. This tool shows only names with a published rank of 1,000 or better for the selected year. An absent name may occur below that selection or be redacted; it is not a zero-birth statement.
Questions about this tool
Does this cover Scotland or Northern Ireland?
No. It is explicitly the combined England and Wales series from the Office for National Statistics.
May I compare a name with the U.S. list?
You can inspect the same spelling on each separate source, but the birth-registration and SSA application totals have different populations and methods. We do not merge them.
