Practical guide
Make this tool useful.
Read the count in the right context
The result reports a 2020 Census national aggregate for an exact first-name spelling. It is not a live count, a count of births in 2020, or a record about a named individual.
Understand the recorded-sex columns
Where the source publishes them, male and female fields show aggregate counts associated with those Census categories. They cannot determine a person’s identity, and the columns may be subject to separate publication rules.
Know why a spelling may be absent
The Census releases names meeting its frequency rules and applies disclosure protection. A missing or differently normalized spelling does not mean nobody has that name. Compare historical births separately in the SSA tool.
Questions about this tool
Is this the number of babies named that in 2020?
No. The Census table summarizes first names across people counted in 2020. The annual birth-name lookup is the separate SSA tool.
Does the count tell me a name’s meaning or origin?
No. Frequency alone cannot establish etymology, ancestry, pronunciation, or cultural identity.
