Practical guide

Make this tool useful.

Set a byline brief

You can leave initials open or specify the first and family initials to retain a familiar monogram. Draw several alternatives before choosing one.

Use plain style rules

A concise byline uses shorter spellings; a balanced one keeps the two parts similar in length. These are visual rules, not a subjective promise that a name will sell books.

Check before publishing

A generated combination can coincide with a real person or existing author. Search your candidate and review relevant rights before using it in print or commerce.

Questions about this tool

Will this keep my identity private?

No. A pen name alone does not provide legal or technical anonymity.

Are full names real people from the Census?

No. The first and last parts come from separate published aggregate sources and are paired synthetically.

How do historical filters work?

An exact birth year (1880–2025) or decade selects given-name spellings published in the SSA national files for that period; the 2020s option covers only published years through 2025. A top-100, top-500, or top-2,000 band limits eligible names by a count-sorted position in the selected year or decade. These controls apply to given-name candidates, not surnames. A strict combination can leave too few names, and the result message will explain the shortage. This is a historical browsing filter, not a claim about a person with that name.
