Practical guide

Make this tool useful.

Build a surname list

Draw several names to compare their visual shape and sound. A first letter can match a character brief; a length limit can help in a compact layout. Repeat the draw to see different eligible entries.

Understand the source years

The familiar default is anchored to the Census 2020 top 1,000. The extended pool adds the 2020 top 30,000 and preserves selected 2010 Census entries. A result inherited only from the 2010 selection is not evidence of its frequency or rank in 2020.

Avoid making origin claims

A surname’s spelling alone does not establish a person’s ancestry or cultural identity. This tool is for generating and filtering names, not for inferring where a person comes from.

Questions about this tool

Are surnames sorted by frequency?

No. Each eligible surname is drawn uniformly. Source ranks helped select the collections, but the draw is not frequency-weighted.

Why might a familiar surname be missing?

The default has 1,000 entries. Choose the 30,006-spelling extended tier for broader coverage, while keeping its mixed 2020/2010 provenance in mind.
